There is a lot of excitement about TI's Next-Gen BeagleBone. If you have a specific question about its performance characteristics, tech specs, or anything else, post it as a reply to this thread. We are working closely with TI and will make sure to respond to your questions.  Thanks everyone!  Sagar

Until we have some space to work in, I might as well add to this thread: I've not had much time to experiment with the board recently, but I had an hour today, and I tried powering the board from a battery…

I just ordered a Beagle Bone. What will be the difference in the present beagle bone and the next gen beagle bone ?

The demo I've been showing here at ELC is using an Attic Lapdock. The only special hack required is a USB cable that doesn't short power sine the Lapdock sources power through a port that normally should…

Interesting news.  Are there more details on the specs somewhere?  I can't seem to find anything at beagleboard.org or at Google Groups.

I think it's great that HDMI is going to be included, since adding an HDMI cape makes a BBone system kind of pricey.  Also, the current HDMI cape made by BeagleBoardToys is limited to 1024 x 768 unless you want to hack the kernel.  I can't seem to find what resolutions the Embest HDMI cape supports.  I'd really like BBone with an Atrix Lapdock which (I think) only supports 1366 x 768.  So I hope the new BBone supports more general HDMI screen resolutions.

We will be releasing more details on the technical specifications in the coming days.

In the mean time if you happen to be at the Embedded Linux Conference, dont miss a chance for a sneak peek!

    Vandana,

Can you tell us anything about the graphics processor?

    Will it decode 1080p video?

    Will it be user programmable?

    Will it accelerate X11?

Will it accelerate image processing libs, like OpenCV?

Does it have proprietary binary blobs that prevent Linux mainline integration?

Vandana, I really need to buy one beagle bone to start with an important graduate project t Carnegie Mellon University. If a next gen beaglebone is in production, can I get one ? I do not want to be purchase an old one, when the new one will be available shortly.

Hi. The hardware is custom built and it is under prototype production, but the beagle bone platform will definitely be helpful to work on the software side. We need to compile the old hardware libraries on beaglebone.

    >Vandana,  Can you tell us anything about the graphics processor?

    Same as current Bone.

    >Will it decode 1080p video?

Not at 30fps for common codecs. The target isn't video applications, but 720p MPEG4 has been demonstrated using software-only decode. The color space conversion for the display is typically done using the SGX, but other solutions seem possible to eliminate dependencies on binary blobs. Other projects have claimed open source, yet still require binary blobs. I'm not interested in trying to fool you.

    >Will it be user programmable?

    Only through OpenGL.

    >Will it accelerate X11?

It could, but the only integration right now is color space conversion. GUI performance is still pretty good. I suggest checking out GUIs on the current Bone with whatever you are currently using. The fast CPU and NEON compositing functions help a lot. The new Bone will have faster/more RAM to help along with faster CPU clock speed and faster flash storage.

    >Will it accelerate image processing libs, like OpenCV?

Not the 3D controller, but NEON does. OpenCV libs ship with the current Bone. Check out http://beagleboard.org/project/stache

You'd have to follow-up with Imagination Tech for the long-term status.

    Jason,

Is there any hardware support for MPEG4 decode?

Does the SoC include a DSP?  If so, is it user programmable?

Is there any current or planned support for OpenCL?

Next-gen BeagleBone will not include a DSP, though it will have 2 32-bit RISC microcontrollers (PRUs) running at 200MHz to assist with I/O and a Cortex-M3 (only useful for power management functions since it can't access the pins).

Again, this is much more about being a system controller and interfacing the Internet to hardware than it is about being a multimedia device---despite having enough horsepower to play some videos.
