TGIF - share your weekend plans for the BeagleBone Black!

Howdy - I was quite pleased to get a groovy BeagleBone BlackBeagleBone Black t-shirt at The specified item was not found. and couldn't resist wearing it for TGIF.  Boris looks so classy!

For those that have already have a BeagleBone BlackBeagleBone Black, do you have any new projects you are going to start this weekend?  And for those that are waiting, is there a project idea that has got you excited?

 

I'm hoping to get RTLizer (an RF spectrum analyzer powered by a USB DVB receiver) to run on the BeagleBone BlackBeagleBone Black using the HDMI output and GPIO inputs for controls.  Here's what it looks like running on my original Boneoriginal Bone with a LCD3 capeLCD3 cape and battery capebattery cape:

I'm planning to finsih reading the in-depth System Reference Manual [PDF] which I found in BeagleBone Black article on the CircuitCo wiki.  I can't wait for my order for Bad to the Bone to arrive:

    Yep, the postman nearly jumped out of his skin when I opened the door just as he was about to knock and snatched it off him image

     

    Thinking I may just order another one or two now before everyone else does !

    RS Components quote delivery 17 May so I have one on order from them as well now.

     

    Interested in how you get on with Debian, hope the day job isn't too distracting, I was made redundant in 2009 so took early retirement, no job to get in my way, just the wife and family image

     

    Just checked Farnell UK and they now say: 16267 will be available for delivery on 17 May, 2013

    That's really not adequate, not by an order of magnitude, maybe two.  I would guess that the stock from each delivery will vanish within an hour every week.  This is the good old (aka. "ridiculous") Rpi situation all over again, and I wonder if CircuitCo is ready to handle the worldwide demand.

     

    "Price is king", and as price drops, demand becomes exponential.  Just like in the parable of the grains of rice and the chessboard, humans aren't very good at understanding and planning for exponentials.

    BeagleBone BlackBeagleBone Black has been in stock consistently with Newark element14 since Monday morning (the "20 in stock" is not the real number.  I'm pretty certain its much more than that but I don't know the actual amount. Sometimes stock gets listed like for hot items like Pi, etc).  If you didn't mind the single order direct ship US->UK fee, then you could get they BBB and also be able to pick from our expanding offering of Adafruit goodies.

    The order I just placed showed delivery on the 22nd on the confirmation page, but the email says date TBC, so I suspect you can't really take these numbers seriously just yet.

    • 24500 Expected to ship 20 May, 2013
    • 1000 Expected to ship 30 May, 2013

    Even assuming you need a healthy dose of skepticism the numbers are still quite impressive.

    I have found the Farnell UK numbers to change both up and down by just refreshing the page. As I placed my order on 30 April there was a large number for delivery in May then the confirmation page showed 3 June but my email then said TBC and the large number for May had disappeared.  I have now had an email notification:

     

    Further to notification from our supplier we write to advise that the expected delivery of items listed in bold has been amended.

     

    2291620 BEAGLEBONE BLACK, CORTEX A8, D 1 1 W/C 13/05/2013

     

     

    It is still only estimated delivery so not holding my breath, I still have one on order from RS with delivery 17/05/2013.

     

    You can also see that other sellers are also quoting large number on back order so yes quite impressive and it's not been mentioned on the BBC yet image

    selsinork, I giggled at the numbers you found on the various sites.  The word "random" comes to mind. image

     

    Very early on, Farnell UK listed a large number here too.  I had pasted the info to a friend, got it back from my logs:

     

    18588 will be available for delivery on 3 May, 2013

     

    This was on 24th April, at a time that they were quoting the price as £27.87 (now £30.99)   I rather suspect that these numbers were all wishful thinking though ("we want" rather than "we will receive"), because if they had indeed received 18k units on 3rd of May and noted that the whole shipment vanished to pre-orders before reaching open stock, they wouldn't be placing such small orders with CircuitCo now.

     

    The way that it's probably working in reality is that CircuitCo's production capacity is so massively oversubscribed from worldwide orders that it's telling even the biggest board shifters like Farnell that they'll get what they get and be happy with it.  The "will be available" listings are probably a mixture of desire and sheer fantasy.  Maybe Farnell even "oiled" their buying process by offering CircuitCo more money, and their price hike was in response to this.  We'll never know.

     

    There's no doubt BBB is popular though. image

     

    There's also no doubt that CircuitCo's current production capacity is insufficient, to put it midly.  The quoted lead time is probably fantasy, not accounting for back-order growth.

    To any Premier Farnell person with some knowledge of the buying / lead time / stock process ....

     

    While rampant uninformed speculation is of course very entertaining, it's not really a helpful part of the engineering process.  Nobody sensible will expect any business secrets to be revealed, nor to be given information specific to Farnell deals with CircuitCo, but if you could help us understand a little bit better what to make of your "supplier lead time" and "will be available" data in the Farnell "Availability" panel, it would make this discussion a little less speculative and a little more informed.

     

    In the case of a product like BBB where supply is severely limited, the information clearly does not mean what it appears to mean at first glance.

    The Circuitco WIKI for the BBB says "We have shipped a total 12,439 boards to date" (dated 10 May @ 23:43)

     

    Yet Farnell UK said  18588 will be available for delivery on 3 May, 2013

    6789 on 29th April @ 16:03. Assuming they only work Monday to Friday, that's 9 working days for 5650 boards, or ~628 per day which really isn't a lot for a fairly simple board like this. So hopefully they'll continue to ramp up production.

    Unfortunately, BBB ex-stock at Farnell seems about as likely as Pi ex stock at RS, ie. not likely in 2013.  There is no hint yet that Beagleboard.org and CircuitCo are even considering high volume production.

     

    At this point in time, there is little doubt that the BBB back-order list is growing at a huge rate, and possibly exponentially as more people hear about it and social networking applies positive feedback.

    I ordered one from Newark when they said they had 0 in stock with an estimate of more in July. I received it about 10 days ago. I don't think their tallys are correct.

    I think my guess about "You'll get what you get" may have some substance, in light of today's new info:

     

    Farnell UK lists Availability today as:

     

      178 will be available for delivery on 18 May, 2013

      500 will be available for delivery on 27 May, 2013

    5000 will be available for delivery on 2 Jun, 2013

    1500 will be available for delivery on 3 Jun, 2013

     

    The very specific "178" seems unlikely to be an estimate nor a bulk pre-order size.

     

    My take on it --- this is the tiny trickle that CircuitCo is releasing to this mass preordering site at this specific time, and bears almost no relationship to preorder volumes.  It's simply what's available in light of CircuitCo's very small production rate, given that everyone in the world deserves a few for fairness.

    I went to newark this morning and there was a banner ad "In Stock Now" for the BBB

     

    Bottom line, If you want one, order it, it doesn't seem to be like the Pi list where you get one 4 months after you order. I like it better this way image

    Got one of these this morning too. My order went in on the 12th. Makes me wonder if either the backorder queue isn't as big as we assumed or they're getting a reasonable shipment in. The availability dates random number generator has changed again today, so I suppose we just have to wait for the postman to knock
