Open Sch & Brd files together

k.portman
k.portman over 15 years ago

Is there a way to open an existing Sch & Brd file together, by default.

When I double click either Sch or Brd file name on the Eagle Control

Panel it asks "Do you also want to load xxx.brd?" (or xxx.sch). I always

respond Yes, sofar never had a need to respond No.

Is there a eaglerc.usr setting to force (or make as default behaviour)

the opening of Brd & Sch files together. If not, could it be

implemented. Much requested for!!!

    3. and be honest... would you be bothered if Eagle could open pdf with

    external application?

It is allready support writing pdf's....

Absolutely I Would Be Bothered if Eagle could open pdf files, partly

    because you then want more.

But mostly, this bothers me because my project tree as viewed from Eagle

gets as cluttered as when viewed from XYplorer. I can see tons of files,

related to the project but NOT part of Eagle and then have lots more

hunting and scrolling when switching between schematics in multiple

projects. It would really annoy me.

That said, If we had a setting in the CP to create custom filters so we

only see the file types we want to see, it's not a problem for me

anymore and I say go ahead, just so everyone stops complaining.

By the time Klaus has read this entire thread, he could have implemented

the suggestion with a filter setting. Talk about wasting developer's

    time...  image

I just want that all files (except backup files) in a project to be visible

in Eagle, and when I double-click one of them, to be opened with associate

    program.

This is the right way .

    The wrong way is to:

-use Windows explorer to browse to my project,

-click on eagle.epf (generic name, the same for all projects), by default

unassocied with Eagle, so I must choose "Open with..." and browse for

    eagle.exe

-wait for Eagle to load all libraries of that project (by default ALL

libraries), and if after loading, I want to add an other component, I must

wait again for ALL libraries to be loaded (try if you don't believe me)

    -only then view/edit the schematic/board

    Count this one too:

-right click on a component, write down on a paper it's library and package

    - from Eagle CP: File/open/library + browse for that library (if it's not in

the first "Library director" it's even worse), and then edit that component,

    according to a datasheet:

-use again Windows Explorer to open that datasheet, related to your project,

and stored on the same root folder with your project

How many windows do you have opened by now: 1.Eagle CP, 2. Schematic,

    3.Board, 4.Lib editor, 5PDF viewer, 6Windows explorer?

Eagle with tabs + PDF reader should be enaugh.... if Eagle would have tabs,

and it would know how to open other files.

And developpers won't spend lots of time on non-Electronic stuff, because it

means just to pass to the OS commnad to open the file

Have you not learned how to associate files in windows? If you have,

your 1st complaint is invalid, though it would be nice if Eagle

    associated the epf files.

So what, you have 6 windows open? Complaining about that is fairly

laughable when you see what I keep open when into a project:

Firefox with 70 to 90 browser tabs open

Eagle with 4 to 5 windows

Thunderbird for email with 3 or 4 tabs open (each tab is an email)

MPLAB with 5 or 6 tabs open (each tab is a file)

    PICKit PIC Programmer

    XYplorer

Foxit reader with about 7 to 10 documents open

    SoftScope (PC oscilloscope software)

OpenOffice Writer and/or Draw and/or Calc

    GIMP

    Sometimes also AutoCAD

    Notepad or PSPad

Serial port diagnostics software I wrote to troubleshoot several of my

    projects

MS Visual Studio with 5 to 20 tabs open.

I regularly run all of that simultaneously without noticeably slowing

down my laptop, and even more on my desktop. Up until about 2 years ago

I did that all on a 1GHz PC, and that could get slow at times... Why

    complain about 6 windows?

Just today I had all that running except for OpenOffice, GIMP, AutoCAD,

or Visual Studio while on-site troubleshooting...

That said, I agree Eagle should have tabs, suggested it months ago.

I highly disagree it should include a pdf viewer built in.

and stop hiding files in the

control pane - which is simplifying the code. if this is untrue, I

I will be very unhappy if no file filtering is available. The best

arrangement is to provide a customizable filter, which is not hard at all.

perhaps your ignorance of programming into the debate. please quote for

me where I, or anyone else, has asked for EAGLE to be aware of and

handle different file types. right, we only asked that they be opened in

the native application, not EAGLE, you misunderstood us. when we say

open, we mean "from the control panel", not "by the EAGLE application".

Actually one person did request a pdf viewer to be built-into Eagle...

or did they say that since EAGLE can generate a pdf file, it might as

well be able to display one? well, that might be taken either way,

especially if you did not get the whole context.

    Why complain about 6 windows?

Because it could be better! It's not this the scope of the forum, where

    developpers find user's needs ?

That said, I agree Eagle should have tabs, suggested it months ago.

I know, this is an other discution, on other thread

I highly disagree it should include a pdf viewer built in.

agree with you. It was a bad idea to create a built-in pdf viewer, by

electronics developper. There are many goods applications for this purpose.

I admit, I'm that person, but it was just an idea (to display content of pdf

in the "information" area of the Control Panel)

But implies hard work from developpers, for ... almost nothing.

So I also admit it's not a good idea.

    1. I do have a usefull file manager (totalcmd), and I know how to use-it.

Then you can set a view filter in Total Commander to see only the file

types you want to see. That's what you asked for, isn't it?

But a full folder is a full foder no matter what file browser you use.

That's not the question, you suggested the Eagle Control Panel to show

a certain set of files, and that's what a good file manager already

    does.

    2. My concept is not "program oriented", but "project oriented"

    Where is the difference?

    3. and be honest... would you be bothered if Eagle could open pdf with

    Yes.

It is allready support writing pdf's....

So Eagle should also contain/support a Gerber Viewer, picture viewer

    etc?

From a file manager I want to see all files. This for is a "file manager".

Or do you like to see only what make you happy (3 files shown, and 10k files

hidden, and then wander "where is the free space of the HDD?!")

But a full folder is a full foder no matter what file browser you use.

    1. If you were not aware of this, Eagle Control Panel DOES show some pdf

files in tree. (It has a filter, but it's not so good in hiding pdf

    files...)

    2. what it's your opinion about files with arbitrary extension, files that

can be created with ulp's in project folder, and are perfectly visible from

    CP?!!!

    2. My concept is not "program oriented", but "project oriented"

    Where is the difference?

Realy do you consider there is no difference?

    3. and be honest... would you be bothered if Eagle could open pdf with

    external application?

    Yes.

Why? because it will know how to properly open a file that now it's

displayed in CP, and it's opened with integrated text editor?!

It is allready support writing pdf's....

So Eagle should also contain/support a Gerber Viewer, picture viewer

    etc?

A custom filter shoud satisfy everybody. Default operation should be: sch,

brd, lbr, scr, ulp displayed, other files not. User (like me) could add

extensions in eaglerc.usr files, so this files could be passed to OS to be

    opened.
