I already have a Raspberry Pi Zero; I tried desktop on it, but Zero doesn't have processing power, which is why I need a Raspberry Pi 5.

I would probably set this up as a server to receive weather information, and display it on a smart mirror. It would get weather info from the home built station in my backyard.

I have never tried a Raspberry pi and would make it as a home server.

I am really excited for this. Now that the Raspberry PI shortage is over, I was just thinking about building a home lab cluster; and then the RBPI 5 was released! It is perfect, Dedicated POE connector and PCIE for M.2. Perfect!

My first project will be attempting to setup a serverless offline cluster!

In last years I used most time used Raspberry Pi for some kind of long-term automation. For example, last few months two of my Raspberry Pies was running experiments (one Rpi 4B and one 3B+) to evaluate supercapacitors as part of Experimenting with Supercapacitors. One of test setup look like this:

    image

Raspberry Pi runs in the box and checks how my mini solar powered temperature sensor behave and checks if it can run for whole day and night with tested supercapacitor. I described my sensor on Element14 community here:  Mini Solar Powered Wireless Temperature Sensor . Raspberry Pi in this test automation project controls

    • WS2812B led strip which behave like virtual sun for testing solar charging
    • ADC module which measures voltage on the supercapacitor used by my sensor node
    • Relay which connects or disconnects ADC from sensor to prevent parasitic discharging of supercapacitor when the program do not measure voltage by ADC
    • Temperature Sensor module for checking that temperature measured by sensor is correct and also protects form overheating by LEDs
    • Light sensor for checking that LEDs are working properly.
    • Radio gateway connected over USB which checks that sensor properly send encrypted packets.

Most of this can be implemented using just microcontroller but Raspberry Pi allows running standalone and log lot of data to text files which are easily retrievalbe over network. Additionaly it can very easily handle USB devices in comparison with my microcontrollers, so SBC is more suitable for this kind of test automation, I think. At last, it is easier to develop program in Python than writing microcontroller firmware in C.

I of course use raspberry Pi for much more projects and tests. For example, at this time, my another Raspberry Pi runs OpenWRT and act as Wi-Fi router for testing Schurter Smart Connector DT31 which I RoadTest this time. But it is not a simple basic Wi-Fi router. Instead it is configured to sniff whole Wi-Fi trafic and even more, it allows me to modify network for trying hacks against the device and see how it behave. I am looking forward to Raspberry Pi 5 because due to exposed PCIe bus it will allow to easily add another (wired or wireless) network interface card to the Raspberry Pi.

At last I have running some purely software project on Raspberry Pi. My main home Rapsberry Pi for example runs web server (written in PHP) which allows me to send Wake on Lan packet to wake my main working computer remotely when I am not in home. Since Raspberry Pi is powerfull enough it runs VPN which make this application more secure.

Right now i would probably start a home lab integrating home automation and production style kind of builds. At the same time, I would also explore using it as a mobile router and maybe make it become part of a cyber deck that i can bring around.
