HDMI resolution problem

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Hi, I've just taken delivery of my Raspberry Pi. I loaded up Debian, hooked it up to my TV via the HDMI connection but the edge of the screen overlaps the screen size. I cannot see the task bar or menu buttons. How can I fix this?

Thanks

Instuctions for others who may be experiencing the same issue with a TV and the Raspberry Pi:

    1. Install a fresh image

    2. start-up the Raspberry Pi and let it set itself up (normal set-up)

    3. After you have gone through normal set-up:

    a. Log-in as a normal user (debian image: pi)

    b. Type the command: "sudo nano /boot/config.txt "

    c. Press enter

    d. Type in: "hdmi_drive=2 " [exactly as it is here]

    e. Then press crtl + o

    f. Press Enter

    g. then press crtl + x

    4. Restart using the command: " sudo shutdown -r now "

That gets the Raspberry Pi to register the TV as a HDMI device. You now have sound! For different resolution:

    5. After you have gone through normal set-up:

    a. Log-in as a normal user (debian image: pi)

    b. Type the command: "sudo nano /boot/config.txt "

    c. Press enter

    d. Type in: "hdmi_group=1 " [exactly as it is here]

    Press Enter

    Type : "hdmi_mode=x " where x = corresponding number of resolution mode. See: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=5851

    e. Then press crtl + o

    f. Press Enter

    g. then press crtl + x

    6. Restart using the command: " sudo shutdown -r now "

Now you have desired resolution and Sound!!!

    Happy Raspberry Pi...ing

I hope this solves your problems

    Fergus

    Hi Fergus

Thanks for posting on how to set up the hdmi screen. It worked first time for this (very) old man. Now I can see text on the screen, it was to small before your post!

    Best regards

    John

    Hi,

I've just tried this. I set hdmi_group=1 and hdmi_mode=19 but that had no effect. I then tried hdmi_goup=2 and hdmi_mode=0x8 but that killed it and I had to start again with a new image.

Maybe I could change the settings on the TV but there are no options that I can find to do so. Does anyone know anything about Panasonic Viera's?

I ran into the same problem. Changed to 4:3 on the picture size using the TV remote. It was like magic . . .

    Kev,

Also: Can you tell us if your TV is registred as a DVI device or HDMI device?  If yes, then follow the instuctions I posted above.  If no, then you might not be putting in the right commands or putting them in wrong.  All commands DO NOT have spaces.

    Then:

You have to check whether or not your TV supports that resoultion.

See this link on how to do that:

    http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5851

    1. Run “tvservice –m CEA” to give a list of CEA supported modes.

To do this, you must first change your directory to: /opt/vc/bin  (to do this enter command in terminal: "cd /opt/vc/bin")

then type: "tvservice –m CEA" (or ./tvservice –m CEA if it doesn't work)

then the Raspberry Pi will show a list of supported formats.  Use http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5851 to get the commands of the supported format. Once you find the supported formats,

    Fergus

Thanks for the reply Fergus. I followed your instructions and found that mode 19 is supported (at least I think it is, the left of the screen is not visible so all I can see is:

              mode 1: 640x480 @60Hz, progressive

              mode 2: 720x480 @60Hz, progressive

              mode 3: 640x480 @60Hz, progressive

    ative)  mode 4: 1280x720 @60Hz, progressive

              mode 5: 1920x1080 @60Hz, progressive

              mode 6: 720x480 @60Hz, progressive

              mode 7: 720x480 @60Hz, progressive

              mode 17: 720x576 @50Hz, progressive

              mode 18: 720x576 @50Hz, progressive

    ative)  mode 19: 1280x720 @50Hz, progressive

              mode 20: 1920x1080 @60Hz, progressive

              mode 21: 720x576 @50Hz, progressive

              mode 22: 720x576 @50Hz, progressive
