Rugged RPi Camera case

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I've been working on a mount and a fairly rugged case for my RPi camera recently, some photos here

https://picasaweb.google.com/selsinork/RPiCamera

The end goal being to do some timelapse and video where the camera would need to be outside in a rather hostile environment

This was the result from earlier today

the little camera did well image

Edit: does the embedded video work ?  I don't see it, so here's the link http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1255yy_sandiefield-road-demolition_webcam

Amazing video. I can see why you wanted it protected and ruggedized!

I couldn't see the video embedded just yet (I believe it may take a while to process, especially with a high-res format), so I used the dailymotion link.

Was it battery-powered, and was it strapped to a lamp-post or something, to log to SD card?

It's setup as passive PoE, 12v ish down the two unused pairs and a local switching regulator to provide 5v to the Pi.

video saved over nfs to a 2TB drive.  unfortunately the raspivid app seems to have some problems running under screen, when you exited the parent terminal screen was started from the Pi would reboot. Even just running raspivid in the background with '&' is unreliable so I really wasn't sure I'd caught it.  I have several bits of video that ended early and even just a loop in a shell script to keep restarting it appeared to cause the Pi to reset at some point.

Not a lamp post, but a bracket bolted to the outside of my window..  As you can guess, that was well inside the evacuation zone. So me sat much further back trying to stop it rebooting while using a 3G connection was somewhat frustrating.  Thankfully it was rebooting rather than locking up, if it had locked up there would have been nothing I could do.

I cropped a few mins off the start of the video, but where it ends is due to another reboot. I thing something like 20-25mins was the max I got without a reboot. Still, worth it in the end image
