altera max II FPGA PLEASE HELP!!!!

rgiguere
rgiguere over 6 years ago

OK so im just getting into FPGA and PLCD  and i ordered a Altera(now intel) MAXII FPGA it came with a usb blaster ribbon cable and usb download cable the problem Im having is it seems the drivers for the usb blaster dont seem to work with windows 10 it keeps saying there is a problem with the driver a bad hash which seems to be a problem with the digital signature the problem is i cant find a single usb blaster driver for the altera that works with winows 10 does anyone have any ideas? By the way Intel tech support was no help they have absolutely no idea and from what I researched every one on windows 10 has the same problem.

It may well be possible that no signed drivers exist for Windows 10. You may be able to get around it by disabling signed driver enforcement - do a search for this and you will find a few hints on how…

Robert, I found this site, which describes the driver installation procedure (including Windows 10). The instructions make it sound like the USB blaster driver is a part of the Quartus II installation…

I can confirm that it was necessary to disable signed driver enforcement when I installed on Windows 10. It did work after that.

Which dev board are you using and are you using a genuine Altera blaster.

I've found that the unofficial but very cheap USB Blaster clones can have issues but that the real thing from Altera/Intel works every time (Windows 7)

Is there any special reason that you are using MAXII - it's a very old device, the latest generation are MAX10 which have some significant advantages.

The board i have is the epm240 the blaster says Altera usb blaster the reason im using it is becaise im a student and money is a little tight it was the cheapest one offered im begining to find out why i was able to get the driver installed by disabling the driver signature enforcement temporarily but when i started Quartus it said that Jtag needs permission and everytime i hit accaept windows 10 goes into a blue error screen that says "pfn list corrupt " then restarts

I can think of lots of things to try but I am kind of shooting in the dark on this:

Try using Windows 7 (if you have that option)

Post pictures of your board and blaster (where did you get them and how much did you pay - these are often indicators of what they might be.)

I've had reasonable results with a cheap Chinese "Blaster" (ie it worked OK but caused conflicts with other USB devices).

A quick look on Aliexpress shows that even an obvious clone (£2.11 price gives it away !!) still says ALTERA on it.

    https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20181030085726&SearchText=fpga+altera+blaster

You could try a few of these (if you can wait for them to turn up).

The official USB2Blaster from Intel/Altera is $225 from Digikey, the Terrasic Blaster (probably OK) is $50 from Digikey.

    I've used this kit:

    https://kamami.com/boards/561438-maximator-promo-with-expander-shield-and-kamami-usb-blaster.html

    and it works OK

There's  a blog (from me) about it on E14 here:

Just reminding you that the Maximator has a different FPGA - I'm sure you noticed really.

It's a nice modern MAX10 and I've found them pretty good.

Thank you again from what i read it seems like it would be a good fit for someone that is just learning about fpga and verilog which is what i really need. Im hopping that the transition from programming Raspberry PI and Arduino will help some but from what i can tell fpga is almost its own style all together
