I just discovered that AMD have decided to support the Spartan6 range for a good few years more.

This is good news for quite a few I should think since the previous line that everyone should move to the Spartan 7 was not universally popular.

The announcement came a few weeks ago but didn't seem to get as much press coverage as I'd have expected.

That's nice, but all they are really saying is they will keep manufacturing the parts. That's an easy decision given the high demand and very little overhead costs. I would be a lot more impressed if this "support" were to include being supported in Vivado.

Anyone else notice how the Xilinx name is completely absent in all announcements lately? I hope AMD is not doing to Xilinx what Intel did to Altera. You do remember Altera, right?
