In the Comments Below: Let us know your project ideas around 7-Segment Displays!
The theme this month is any projects involving 7-segment displays. Given how pervasive 7 segment displays are, you are free to work on any projects that involve 7-segment display. You can build any project that uses a 7-segment display. You can use 7-segment displays to build your own calculators, digital clocks, weather clock, electronic meter, information display, testing equipment, a timer for a pet feeder, an experiment, and more.
A 7 segment display consist of seven LEDs arranged arranged as a rectangle of two vertical segments on each side with one horizontal segment on the top, middle, and bottom. Additionally, the seventh segment bisects the rectangle horizontally. Each of these segments form a numerical digit (both Decimal and Hex) to be displayed. Most digital equipment uses a 7-segment displays to convert digital signals into a form that can be understood by a human being. This info takes the form of a numerical data which can form not only numbers, but some characters and symbols. They can be used for a wide variety of applications and in place of a more expensive liquid crystal display. There are also 9- , 14- and 16-segment displays (for full alphanumerics); however, these have mostly been replaced by dot-matrix displays. The segments of a 7-segment display are referred to by the letters A to G, where the optional DP decimal point (an “eighth segment”) is used for the display of non-integer numbers. 7 segment displays may use a liquid crystal display (LCD), a light-emitting diode (LED) for each segment, an electrochromic display, or other light-generating or controlling techniques such as cold cathode gas discharge (Panaplex), vacuum fluorescent (VFD), incandescent filaments (Numitron), and others. The cold-cathode, neon-lamp-like nixie tube was the precursor to the 7 segment display in the 1950s through the 1970s.
