Hi Gihu, The root terminal application does not work correctly and will be removed from future releases of Debian. It requires a root password to be entered, and none is assigned by default. You can get…

Is the released image the same as in the following link?

probably similar, Robert Nelson is the driving force behind the BeagleBoard.org debian image (three cheers for him!!!)

2GB eMMC is likely to mean what is installed by default will be minimal in some respects. Everyone will want something different anyway.. The good thing about Debian is that the packages will be available to install even if they're not installed by default.

I welcome the move to Debian as it'll give a lot of people a better initial experience.

At the same time I'll miss the stripped down very much embedded feel you got with angstrom. As we've explored elsewhere, various things run faster on angstrom compared to debian as there's less baggage with angstrom.  I won't miss angstrom itself; the idea was good, it was the implementation that failed.

Yeah, I've noticed it as startup takes a while longer (Angstrom was super-quick). Packages are lean as you say. But right now everything I've tried works (not done a lot with it yet though). Now need some more BBBs! There was some news article yesterday about some huge bitcoin mining operation using RPIs. (Presumably for the FPGA orchestration). They had sucked up thousands of RPIs. In a similar vein maybe some other organisation has found a need for low-cost computing platforms too and has started hoarding BBBs.

Radio Shack in the USA has started selling overpriced RasPi and BBB "starter kits", so they may have sucked up a lot of RasPi and especially BBB inventory.  However, they're in financial trouble and just announced they're closing 1100 stores (approx 20% of total) image.  So maybe we'll see a bunch of BBBs flood the market one of these months.

    Hi all,

I have not found where to put my question, and I have almost no idea of linux...

I have the Angstrom image on the eMMC, and I boot the debian image from the sd card (no cape used, just keyboard, mouse and a TV connected in the HDMI), the debian starts as a user, and if I want to start root terminal, it asks for a password. Does anyone know that password?

What I am doing by now is logging out, and after that logging in as root. Is it posible that the debian starts as root instead of user?

I hope any of us can help me.

    Regards,

    Miguel

    Thanks shabaz,

The problem is that I cannot use the root terminal, and I don't know if I have the same permissions with the user debian than as a root (I suppose not). I am starting with Linux and sometimes not always I understand how things works... image

For example, If I try to modify the uEnv.txt file from the desktop envoirement I have in return a no permission message, just to be able from the Desktop I have to log out, and log in as a root.

Fortunately, here in element14 there is quite information about linux in single-board, as BBB

    Regards,

    Miguel

    Hi Miguel,

I wasn't sure, do you mean you can successfully log in as user debian, but not as root?

If so, you can execute any root user command by typing 'su' once you're logged in as user debian, from the command line. If you run any program from the GUI that needs root access, it will prompt you for the root password.

Most of the time you won't want to be root user, and when you do (e.g. to install a program) you can use the 'su' command to become root user.
