  • EMC SHIELDING IS THE MECHANICAL FIX FOR AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM

    ldonovan
    ldonovan

EMC is the acronym for electromagnetic compatibility which means the ability of equipment to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable electromagnetic disturbances to other equipment in that environment.

Electronics engineers are very familiar with this and will consider in their design good board layout, filtering, grounding, signal integrity etc. to try resolving electromagnetic interference (EMI) at its source. However, shielding of the enclosure is just as important and solves the problem of radiated emissions and susceptibility. Shielding is a mechanical fix for an electrical problem and the enclosure design engineer should be aware of the types of gaskets available and their different attributes and ensure there is enough land area on the enclosure seams, doors etc. to fit the gasket.

There are 4 main gasket types available:

    • Knitted wire mesh
    • Electrically conductive elastomers
    • Conductive fabric over foam
    • Metal: Beryllium copper/stainless steel

Knitted wire mesh can be fitted in grooves or surface mounted when bonded to a carrier. There are four wire options available to address shielding and corrosion issues. When bonded to a carrier it offers good dust and moisture seal, often preferred for rugged military applications as it provides good Electro magnetic Pulse (EMP) protection as the gasket can carry high currents.

Conductive elastomers are conductive particles loaded into silicone or fluorosilicone. Many different particles are available from carbon up to pure silver, the most popular are nickel coated graphite and silver-plated aluminum. All, apart from carbon, offer good all-round shielding and high performance at all frequencies. Nickel coated graphite is very cost effective being a factor of 3-5 times less expensive than silver plated aluminum and yet still offers shielding effectiveness similar to that of silver-based products. The conductive elastomer compound can be extruded in continuous lengths in many different profiles and can be molded as sheet and die cut or molded as a component. Conductive elastomer “O” rings make for a very cost-effective EMI seal and are popular in defense and aerospace applications due to their small profile size, low weight and high performance.

Form in place is a conductive elastomer, being conductive silicone in liquid form for depositing direct to enclosure hardware. Particularly suited for use on small enclosures due to the narrow land widths, different fillers are available similar to that of conductive elastomers. This type of gasket offers a dust & moisture seal. It is not suitable for opening and closing of the enclosure.

Oriented wire in silicone are Monel or aluminum wires vertically oriented in solid or sponge silicone. Available as flat sheet material for surface mounting, the gasket can be die cut to shape or fabricated from strips to make a picture frame gasket and provides a good EMI and environmental seal. This type of gasket is very popular in defense applications as it offers very low contact resistance as the wires penetrate the mating surface.

Conductive fabric over foam gaskets are good for commercial applications, most are stick on surface mount and are soft and compliant making good cabinet door seals. Very popular in laptop computers, gaming machines etc. for grounding. Beryllium copper fingers are good in shear/wiping applications and will be seen on doors for shielded rooms, they offer good all-round high performance and are available in many plated finishes to enhance shielding and address galvanic concerns.

TE Connectivity’s F-Spring Contact FASTON Terminal Combines Low Insertion Force With High Performance

    - New terminals feature 35N maximum insertion force, excellent retention, low profile, high current, wide temperature range and wide range of wire sizes -

MENLO PARK, California – April 16, 2015 – TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity, introduces its FASTON terminal solution made with an F-spring contact that offers improved retention, insertion, and contact-stability benefits compared with other solutions on the market. The terminal’s ergonomic features can help manufacturers provide safe and efficient assembly, which in turn results in end-product reliability and customer satisfaction. The F-spring contact FASTON terminal is suitable for large and small appliances, power tools, electric motors, air conditioning, lighting, automotive, high-temperature designs and many other applications that require long-life interconnections.

TE’s F-spring product offers a low insertion force (LIF) of less than 35N maximum, due to its leaf-spring rolls, flared lead-in, and milled surface. Located on the top and bottom surface, the leaf-spring rolls help provide high normal force in the contact areas and LIF during tab insertion. They also exhibit optimum wiping action during contact engagement. The F-spring contact FASTON terminal also has a locking dimple on a cantilevered surface that works as a safety device to maintain contact position and helps to prevent unintentional disconnection. Moreover, the new terminal offers design engineers the sought-after benefits of small size, a high operating temperature and a high current rating (20A max). Its nickel-plated steel contacts are for 6.35 x 0.8mm tabs according to UL 310 and IEC 61210 Norms.

“We developed our new F-spring contact FASTON terminals to address safety and quality standards that affect a range of applications in many different markets,” said Ugo Aime, TE Connectivity product manager for FASTON terminals in EMEA. “These terminals offer our customers advantages over competitive products, such as higher retention with a tab counterpart, a greater number of mechanical and electrical contact points, tab guidance for easier insertion, and increased mechanical stability in the mated position. Plus, their small profile makes them easy to insert, especially when the mating tabs are located in difficult-to-reach areas.”

TE’s F-spring contact FASTON products are offered in straight and flag versions and are RoHS compliant.

HARRISBURG, Pa. – April 21, 2015 – TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity, announces its new PRO BEAM EB16 optical termini that bring the durability and ruggedness of expanded beam optical technology to its size 16 contacts. Designed to fit MIL-DTL-38999 Series III size 16 cavities, the termini are a drop-in replacement for physical contact termini. Recently TE’s PRO BEAM EB16 termini was chosen as the ARINC 845 industry standard for rugged optic applications within commercial aviation applications.

“The non-contacting interface of optical connections means no wear, which is especially important in high-mating cycle and high-vibration applications,” said Rodney Smith, Product Manager, Global Aerospace, Defense & Marine, TE. “The use of expanded beam optical technology also offers low sensitivity to thermal fluctuations and stable performance over the life of the system.”

The termini’s ball lens physically expands and collimates the transmission signal into an optical beam with 30 times its original area to provide easier optical alignment, low sensitivity to contamination, and consistent performance over thermal changes. The beam is then refocused back down onto the core of the receiving fiber.

Because the beam size is substantially expanded when traversing the mechanical interface, the signal will not deteriorate by airborne contamination particles of the same size that seriously affect the performance of the PC connection.

The PRO BEAM EB16 termini is field terminable and is intended for a variety of commercial and military aerospace applications including fixed wing and rotary aircraft, unmanned aerials systems and radar and sensor systems.

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Sept. 9, 2014 – TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity, announces its new RoHS-compliant black zinc nickel plating for connectors and backshells. The new coating is TE’s response to new environmental regulations that seek to reduce the use of cadmium. The black zinc nickel plating is approved as defined by MIL-DTL-38999L, and offers the same level of electrical performance, harsh environment protection and temperature ranges as cadmium finishes.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer a solution helps our customers reduce cadmium usage and provides enhanced performance over similar products,” said Chris Novak, product manager, Global Aerospace, Defense & Marine, TE Connectivity. “And, because black zinc nickel and cadmium have similar electrical potential, new parts can be easily integrated into existing applications without additional engineering or excessive downtime.”

TE’s Raychem standard backshells can be supplied with the new RoHS compliant black zinc nickel plating and the bandstrap backshells are approved to the AS85049 specification for black zinc nickel with 1000-hour salt spray resistance testing.

Black zinc nickel finish is non-magnetic and non-reflective and ideal for a variety of applications including next-generation harsh-environment vehicles, electric drive vehicles, aerospace, mass transit, automotive, communications equipment, power generation and metering equipment.

The new plating option is available on TE’s DEUTSCH standard MIL-DTL-38999 Series III or DTS High Current connectors and Raychem standard backshells and accessories. NECTOR M Power System Provides a New Standard

for Connecting Various Lighting and Power Requirements

-- Expandable power system solution improves reliability

    and reduced installation time --

DARMSTADT, Germany – 27 January, 2015 – TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity, announces its newly enhanced NECTOR M power system. In addition to meeting IEC 61535 standards, the power system solution is designed to meet the UL 1977 guidelines and just debuted a 5-position splitter that provides power, signal and control connections options for multiple lighting and electrical devices. TE’s NECTOR M Power system solution is a fully pluggable, modular wiring connector and cabling system for lighting and permanent indoor electrical installations in the construction industry. It’s round design drastically reduced installation time especially compared to rectangular connector systems in nearly any indoor installation. The enhanced systems allow electrical contract manufacturers the ability to engineer, design and build power distribution units, electrical devices and cable assemblies off-site that result in reduced on-site labor costs, increased efficiency and improved reliability for permanent electrical installations.

“There is a greater demand for convenience and comfort that is driving the change of how a building’s power and lighting are wired within the walls, ceilings and floors,” said Alex Hunt III, product manager, TE Intelligent Buildings. “The NECTOR M Power system provides the construction industry with increased design flexibility that seamlessly integrates into existing and new construction designs.”

The state-of-the-art multi-pole, keyed, modular wiring system is ideal for lighting designers, contractors and OEMs that require more flexibility in distributing power to various lighting systems and other common electrical devices within buildings. The availability of junction boxes and splitters makes it easy to configure the system during installation but also to reconfigure the system during refurbishment or upgrade the lighting fixtures. The multiple branch circuit capability simplifies cabling in the premises and its circular form factor simplifies routing during installation when compared with the rectangular electrical connection systems in the market.

The NECTOR M Power system offers various lighting luminaire design options. The 3 Pole power systems are ideal for use in ceiling, wall, pendant, and furniture lighting fixtures that require a ground connection in residential or commercial retail spaces. The multi-phase, 5 Pole power systems provide the power and signal connections required in horticultural and lighting control applications. The multi-phase, 7 Pole systems provide additional power and signal connections for use in emergency lighting systems and for color control lighting capability.

The power system connectors have operating temperatures between minus 40 degrees Celsius and up to 70 degrees Celsius and provide an IP20 seal rating. The connectors are available with an IEC 61535 rating of 7 A up to 20 A at 400 VAC and a UL 1977 rating of 10 A up to 20 A at 600 VAC making the connectors suitable for use almost anywhere in the world.

NECTOR M Power system connectors have closed barrel pin and socket crimped wire termination terminals. The connectors are available in white and UV resistant black with multiple keying options available to provide error-free assembly.
