Audio & Visual Cue System for Anosmia (Smell Disorder) and Smart WheelChair - Ft. Amazon's Alexa

Week 7: Aug 14 - 20

This week I planned to complete the entire hardware circuit connections for both 'Cue System for Anosmia' and 'Smart WheelChair' sections of my project and then position everything inside the case built for it. In this blog, you will find an overview and video with an explanation of the entire hardware setup of my project, description about the case designed for this project with photos and then links to circuit connections & list of hardware for completed subsections of my project.

Overview

The 'Cue based system for Anosmia' system’s hardware includes gas sensors (MQ2 and MQ5 pairs) which will help in identifying the smell sensed and Bluetooth module for communication of collected smell information from extra unit to the main unit. I have planned such that the main smell sensing unit with Arduino MKR1000 and Bluetooth module will be placed in the living room with Echo Dot nearby. The extra smell sensing unit, which is a copy of the main smell sensing unit will be placed in the kitchen (where there are more chances of fire compared to other rooms in the house). In the extra unit, the brain will be Arduino UNO. The extra unit is connected to the relay module which will be used in the smart wheelchair system.

The 'Smart WheelChair' system's hardware includes the smarts. The temperature sensor (TMP36) for temperature measurement, accelerometer and an ultrasonic sensor for fall and collision detection. Also, this includes the relay module which will control home appliances based on the voice command decoded by Amazon Alexa.

Case

The Case is made using foam sheets and glued together using Ana bond and Hot glue. Exercise Caution while using Ana bond which is a strong adhesive and you might end up sticking your hands (as I did image and then you have to use hot water and struggle to release your hands for a while). If you have a hot glue gun, I recommend to use it compared to Ana bond in terms of safety. I then wrapped the whole case with insulation tape (black) for a more cleaner look. I generally use Metal Mechanix set to build a case (Previously built cases - Traffic Predictor #5 - Machine Learning and Building a case for the kit and DIY LED Ferris Wheel ) but this time I gave this a try. A 3D printed case will be costlier compared to the cases built using foam sheets or Metal Mechanix and it also takes time to build. However, the end result of a 3D printer will be better in looks and strength. (Another reason for not using a 3D printer is that I don't own one to play around).

Below are the photos of the case made from Metal Mechanix set for the extra and main smell sensing units of my project initially. Then I switched to use the case made using foam sheets for my project.
