Monthly Theme Poll

In the Comments Below:  Let Us Know Your Upcycling Ideas!

Let us know which cool piece of vintage electronics you want to upcycle and you could win a Raspberry Pi or Arduino for your project proposal!

The theme this month is Recycle & Retrofit  and it comes from a suggestion from robogary. Old radios and game consoles first come to mind, but your can involve taking any unused appliance and upcycling it using electronics of your choice!  Recently,  balearicdynamics gave a 3 part workshop on upcycling called Vintage Upcycling with Raspberry Pi or Arduino Workshop (Zero to Hero) Series.  The idea for this workshop was to inspire you to take cool vintage appliances and repurpose them using a Raspberry Pi or an Arduino.   As a fan of electronics, you likely have some older electronics lying around that are in need of a second life.  While you can recycle & retrofit any old electronics, the great thing about vintage gear is that many of them are built to last.   Some of this stuff you might have lying around, such as an old game console, a computer, or a music player.   Or, you may know how to get your hands on something second hand. Safely disposing of electronics is a concern,  The goal of upcycling is to prevent wasting material that could be potentially useful by making use of existing ones.  Doing so,  reduces the consumption of new raw materials in effect creating a new product; thus, reducing energy usage, air and water pollution, and even greenhouse gas emissions.

Upcycling connects the past to present in a way that honors what we cherish from vintage electronics while improving it to make it contemporary using modern electronics such as a Pi or an Arduino.  One of the goals of upcycling is have a more "creative" version of recycling, not only designing, adapting and making usable something vintage, while adding more value, and a brand-new charm. To "upcycle" an item, is to essentially update, modernize or deconstruct it.  Upcycling is about aesthetics as well as substance. Upcycling can make what you once loved, contemporary while not losing any of its old world charm.

Here are some Upcycling Projects to help inspire you:

Tempus Fugit is usually translated as "Time Flies" or "it escapes, irretrievable time." It's a good way to think of upcycling....   Upcycling is a great way to connect the past to the present.

Your Project, Your Ideas!

About Project14
Directions

Every month you'll have a new poll where you'll get to decide an upcoming project competition, based on your interests, that will take place a couple of months in advance. Themes are broad in scope so that everyone can participate regardless of skill set.

What are Monthly Themes?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) a new theme will be posted on Project14.
  • Submit your ideas (proposals) for your projects to get feedback from the rest of the community.
  • Submit a project entry in the Theme space once you start working on it.

What are Monthly Theme Polls?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) there is a project theme poll.
  • Vote on which project competition you want to see for the following upcoming theme.
    • The themes voted on during the previous poll decided the upcoming theme.
    • If you submit an idea for a theme that is not used then it can still be used in a future poll.
  • Themes comments and ideas from the comments section of the project theme poll.

Step 1: Log in or register on element14, it's easy and free.

Step 2: Post in the comments section below to begin a discussion on your idea. Videos, pictures and text are all welcomed forms of submission.

Step 3: Submit a blog post of your progress on your project by the end of the month.  You are free to submit as many blog entries as you like until the beginning of the next theme.

Be sure to include video proof of your project!

Visit:  Recycle & Retrofit  or tag your project blog RecycleRetrofitCH

You have until December 14th End of Day to submit your completed project!

A jury consisting of your peers will judge project submissions!

In the Comments Below:  Let Us Know Your Upcycling Ideas!

If your project proposal involves a Pi or an Arduino we may send you a board to help your project along!

I am not sure if this falls too far outside the Upcycling Vintage Electronics theme, but I was thinking about taking an old 70's version of a Mr. Machine and replacing the windup spring motor with an electric…

Haha yes Tariq is very nice.

Keep in mind power and heat-

you need 3.1A optimally and most likely, active cooling.

If you manage to not do active with a super large heatsink I'd be extremely impressed.

Cameras- 2 for front and rear. Maybe a camera switcher device.

    Mics- maybe a HAT

I've made a bulky 7" "tablet" with the 4 before and it was very very painful.

(I don't think you can fit everything into that chassis!)

You'll also need to find adapter boards for the screens, which may be painful

Let me know if you need anything with this, I have a relative small amount of experience...

That would definitely be interesting to compare versus the RPi zero!  Haven't had a chance to do much aside from read about the RPi 4.  Now that the RPi 400 has been released...  Drool!  Lots of advances since I was last playing with the technology!  I will keep my eye open for any possible RPi packages coming my way, thank you tariq.ahmad !
