First Steps - Intel Edison step 2

7 Feb 2017

In the last post First Steps - Intel Edison  I outlined installing software, and where to find the software.

This post will be about actually making it do something.

Firstly the Edison Module was fitted to the Arduino Breakout board

The Grove shield was attached (mine required straightening of the pins).

As well as the two rows of headers, the ISP is extended up to the Grove shield, so be careful when connecting the two.

I connected a LED module to D2 as a starting point.

Intel have provided a Get Started guide here.

https://software.intel.com/en-us/iot/hardware/edison

Step 1 is Assemble board

You're now presented with an option

image

In my case I chose the Arduino expansion board and checked the switch, then plugged the USB cable into the upper Micro USB socket.

Windows went through it's driver install and complained.

The Edison device showed up, but there was no capacity like the guide suggests.

The bottom of the guide has a Step 2. Run Setup Tool.

The page suggests downloading and running the latest drivers

The link takes you to here https://software.intel.com/iot/hardware/edison/downloads

Click on the exe which will install a application to guide you through the process.

Eventually you get to this.

image

Click on Next

It takes you through the Agreement and talks about some information about the licences

The next screen gives information about what the utility has detected.

image

In this case the USB drivers are not installed (I knew that way back)

Click on the Install Drivers and it wants a chunk of hard drive.

image

I'm puzzled by the amount of space required these days for what is simply a USB driver.

Why does it need to download 11Mb and then take 139MB of space ??

So here is the next weird bit.

I thought I'd already installed the drivers, and the driver installation seems to have confirmed that.

image

So clicking on the Yes uninstalls a bunch of stuff, then clicking on the Device Driver installation Wizard brings up this after a few seconds..

image

Desptie it being a proper driver with all the right names, it comes up with this

image

I was fairly sure I had an Edison

image

I prefer to not allow software to assume I trust it, so I prefer to force it to ask me.

6 or 7 requests later and various drivers I know have an Edison showing me it has 767Mb free space.

The next step is to update the firmware.

This is rather old version, so in this case it is worthwhile.

image

It seems that a large chuck of hardrive is now required.  2.8GB

image

If you're on a slow Internet connection or have limited bandwidth you may want to seek alternative methods.

image

So I'm waiting for the download to complete, and all I want to do is make a LED blink.

While waiting I tried looking for the package it was trying to download.

image

I couldn't find it on the site, so I'm unsure how you could point the installer at a local stored image.

It has stored the zip file in the place I told it, so I guess if you have issues you can go back ... but I'd prefer to know where the files are on the site.

While I was searching, the computer beeped and the Edison disappeared.

image

There is no activity lights blinking ... just the power light that remains steady.

A few more beeps and a picture on how to connect to it, then some more re-flashing.

image

10 minutes ... I started this about 1.5hrs ago.

More beeping and the lights also change

image

It still keeps beeping at me and it's dropped out, but the Installer is suggesting this.

image

I chose to Repair Drivers, although I'm not sure why it needs to.

It also seems to be repeating the process we went through earlier.

I now realise that this was an option you could use not something that needed to be done ...

I had also not rebooted the computer BUT I can't recall seeing that message, so I'm not sure it is required.

So for some unknown reason, I seem to be going backwards.

image

Obviously about now I'm starting to make noises or worse.

image

I want to program this on my laptop and I'm not looking forward to repeating it.

Somewhere there is 3GB of Hard Drive used, but the 292MB file it downloaded is there.

It seems that the program expands the file into a temporary location before loading it onto the Edison

I decided enough was enough for tonight, and since it came back with exactly the same screen AGAIN I chose Finish.

As it closed there were multiple warnings about the F:\ drive requiring formatting and this

image

So presumably after a disconnect and repower it might wake up and we can proceed.

This started as a simple blog, but has now grown over a few posts, so an index is appropriate.
