Audio & Visual Cue System for Anosmia (Smell Disorder) and Smart WheelChair - Ft. Amazon's Alexa
Week 1: July 3 - 9
I am glad to be selected as a sponsored contestant for the 'Design for a Cause' Design Challenge. Thanks to the Element14 Community team and the sponsor Arduino. This blog is to introduce my project's cause and provide an overview of its design.
Cause:
- This project is to enhance the lives of people suffering from Anosmia, an inability to sense smell. It has been reported that 5% of the population suffer from Anosmia [Source - Link].
- I was also moved to help the characters in Design for a Cause Challenge: Meet The Users. They had a common objective to be fulfilled which is to control appliances (TV, Charge Cell Phone). This project will also help them to meet this objective.
Design for the Cause:
This project can be split into two separate systems as below,
- Audio & Visual Cue System
- Smart Wheel Chair
1. Audio & Visual Cue System
This system is for people suffering from Anosmia. The Arduino MKR1000 with a to be developed machine learning algorithm will be able to predict the name of smell it is exposed to. This way it can then give out cues to the people. Amazon's Alexa will feature here to voice out the cue.
What's the use?
- The person suffering from Anosmia will be able to understand the smell in the environment they are in.
- They can be alerted in case of a smoke or when potentially harmful gases leak out.
2. Smart Wheel Chair
The Smart Wheel Chair will be able to sense the environment and get updates (like temperature), also it can control appliances (TV, Chargers etc.) through voice commands. Amazon's Alexa will feature here to serve as the mediator to decode the voice commands to Arduino MKR1000 which will then control appliances. Also, the accelerometer and Ultrasonic sensor will be used to alert the person in the wheelchair for chances of a fall or a collision.
