Are you worried about the side effects of being near power lines?

Are you concerned about the possible side effects of cell phone radiation?

Have you wondered if Wi-Fi radiation is safe?

Are you curious whether there is significant stray radiation from your microwave oven?

Are you uneasy about exposure to radon gas?

Are you nervous about high levels of CO or CO2 in the air you breathe?

Are you anxious about low levels of oxygen in the air you breathe?

Are you apprehensive about exposure to ultra violet light?

All of these potential hazards are factors in modern life, but they are invisible and not easy to detect with our built-in human senses. This project is an entry in the Safe and Sound Design Challenge - dealing with how to stay safe and sound in an environment that includes these factors. It will attempt to cover four aspects of these invisible environmental factors:

  1. Which environmental factors are worth addressing to help keep us safe and sound? How dangerous are they?
  2. How can we measure and monitor these environmental factors? Can we develop appropriate wearable instrumentation to accomplish this?
  3. Take some measurements to see what a typical environment contains. Do we need to take action?
  4. Figure out some practical methods we can use to mitigate or minimize our risks. How can we keep ourselves safe and sound?

This introduction to the project already outlines the main factors that will be covered in the first aspect above but future blogs will go into more depth on why these factors were chosen.

However the next blog in this project will outline the wearable instrumentation that I proposed to develop to measure these factors.

I am enthusiastic to take on this project and anticipate I will need to learn a great deal to complete the ambitious objectives.

    Great wearable project and blogs! I have been working on a wearable personal safety device that uses the Adafruit Flora, Bluefruit LE, and other Adafruit Flora compatible modules. Your project ideas, designs, and blogs are very inspiring. Thank you for sharing your progress. I find it very helpful.

     

    It is really great that TI is sponsoring project competitions such as this. I am very envious of your work with TI components. You have done an amazing job with this competition.

     

    Here is a sneak peak at my Adafruit wearable project. I used 3M Reflective Fabric commonly found on safety vests and a metal slap bracelet in the construction of the band. I have less experience with sewing than I do with electronics. This project is not complete.

    The gas sensor PCB I am making can handle sensors that detect off-gassing compounds, but the first card won't be populated with one of these because you can usually smell these compounds and the sensors are hard (for me) to calibrate. I have ordered 10 PCBs (they cost about $1 each) and I do have some different sensors on order so I could make up a separate Boosterpack that measures other chemicals if I have time. One sensor I have on order is an MS1100 which measures several off-gassing volatile organic compound (VOCs) chemicals like formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, etc.

    The air quality sensor I will be using claims to measure particulates, but I suspect not very well. Good particulate measurement systems that can handle pollen (which I am interested in) tend to be too expensive and bulky for this wearable project, but some interesting devices are in development - maybe for a future project.
