Summer of FPGAs

Main Agenda | Design Challenge | Essentials | Quiz | RoadTests | Tech Spotlights | Webinars | 2 Minute FPGA | Other Related Programs | Embedded | Manufacturers

FPGAs are synonymous with artificial Intelligence, high performance computing, embedded vision, automated vehicles, the 5G transformation, and more. In the coming years, there will be incredible innovation for which FPGAs will be an integral component. In the spirit of providing educational enrichment and skills-building for future FPGA engineers, element14 is announcing the Summer of FPGAs.

Over the summer months, element14 will be offering educational workshops and webinars, training courses, and opportunities to RoadTest the latest products.  The Summer of FPGAs will be a multi-supplier event where we’ll provide a place to learn and build new skills, with events geared for those just starting out as well as those who are experienced. We will also give our members the chance to win some of these great products from our suppliers.

interesting topics. Would there be room for an intro: FPGA for Dummies for non-FPGA engineers ?

This is in interesting topic to me. I like the options that are give for the various FPGA vendors, but I would toss in QuickLogic and their QuickFeather FPGA board along with SensiML as an Edge AI/ML FPGA…

Found these ancient parts the other day, sitting in a box. Doubt I'll ever use them, but figured they were cool enough to take a photo of..

The center parts are 30-year-old PLDs (predecessors of FPGAs).

It's such a simple device, that in the zoomed-in photo above, you can actually see (from left to right) the output drivers with the naked eye, and the output cells, and the area that's the programmable AND array.

    Hi Cosmin,

I sent you a private message with my work email address.  We can work out the details over email and I can let you know what we'll need on our end if we were to have this added to the agenda.  It looks like the agenda will stretch out all the way to October so we'll try to include it with the other activity.

Hi Tariq, sure, I can do a standalone webinar; however, I would like more to have my webinar included in the "Summer of FPGAs" program.  Can you please take a look and try to see if it is possible to include this webinar in the existing summer of FPGAs agenda?

    Hi ciorga ,

If you are interested in doing a webinar feel free to contact me directly tariq.ahmad and I can see what we can do to add this.   There is a community member workshop that we are planning towards September and October so maybe we can add a standalone webinar around the same time?

    Hi Randall,

if people are interested and if you can add additional items to the agenda I can present something on power integrity issues and solutions on FPGA boards.  Depending on the specific application implemented in an FPGA the power supply on the board may or may not work properly (impedance resonance peaks that may affect the timing in the FPGA creating failures, and some similar power related topics).  So the same power supply design may work for most of the applications programmed in the FPGA but some applications may create intermittent failures or intermittent resets of the FPGA.  The material that I can present addresses these issues and I can present it if you think people are interested in this topic.

I am curious to see if the focus on FPGAs this summer will spark some FPGA application projects on the forum.

There have been a few over the years, but somehow it doesn't seem like a lot of projects - here are a few I've seen:

Tic Tac Toe on FPGA Platform

    An FPGA-Based Organ Tuner

Episode 388: FPGA MIDI Music Synthesizer

Driving a Laptop LCD using an FPGA

Make a Logic Analyzer from your Dev Kit Part 2: Papilio FPGA

PanelDriver: A FPGA based HDMI to FPD-Link converter

Episode 353: Program Your Own FPGA Video Game

    Thank you for reply.

I looked at this furthermore and it really looks that it is not a good time to roadtest Icicle Kit now. Icicle kit is currently only with engineering sample chips in comparison with splash kit planned to roadtest which is already available with production chips. ES chips has some (minor) bugs and I expect that Microchip/Microsemi will release Icicle kit with productions chip later (similarly like they did in case of splash kit). Also because Icicle Kit contains pretty new SoCs some advanced documentation needed for full evaluation is still not released yet. But I think Icicle kit should be good for roadtesting in about next year because parameters of this board (and chip) are very good and these new Microsemi SoCs can beat Xilinx Zynq in many aspects. So, I recommend adding it to the list for future.
