Contest Details:  Project14 | Holiday Special 19: Over $20,000 Worth of Prizes and Gifts to Give!

 

We're doing a round up of 30 projects from previous Holiday Special project competition.  The third annual Holiday Special 19 is an open-ended holiday project competition that challenges you to make a project that reflects what the holiday's mean to you. We're asking the community members to spread mirth and merry to the world through projects that use music, LED Displays, Nixie Pixels, Strobe Lights, Fog Machines, or anything else that puts you in a celebratory mood.  Your project can also be a "From Me to You" project, a thoughtful projects that's made with others in mind.  It can inspired by gifts, food, or cards exchanged during the holidays. Or you could focus on electronic ways of sending the warmest wishes to friends and family - could be an electronic greetings card, a way to automatically email or use RF transmission to link up via video etc.  It can also be a fun project that's made in the holiday spirit such as a snow globe that will warn you of inclement weather conditions, voice-activated ornaments, jazzed up holiday cards, LED decorations - anything that means the holidays to you.  Your project can be related to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Festivus for the rest of us related!  It can even be a Star Wars project, if you only believe in the Force.image

 

The only thing that we ask is that your holiday project shows heart!  The project that shows the most heart wins a Tektronix Oscilloscope and Application bundle (~value of $18,500) plus a tool kit (~value of $325) to gift to another member for their project.  Three first place winners will receive a will receive a tool kit bundle (~value of $225) along with a $100 shopping cart as well as a $100 shopping cart to give to another member for their projects.  All Gift to Gives can be given to any member that submitted a project in either Holiday Special 19 or the RF (Radio Frequency) which will be happening at the same time.  Throughout the month we'll have holiday round ups of previous projects submitted during previous Holiday Special competitions!  You can use those as inspiration for submitting a Holiday project that is unique to you.  Also,  check out our Engineer and Maker's Wish List 2019 in the Members area and share your product Wishlist and find links to element14 presents product giveaways to collect more tools to help deck out your bench!

 

Your project will be judged based on the following criteria:

 

  • Follow the Steps - Did you show the steps it took you to complete the project (text, video, or images) and did you include documentation such as schematics?
  • Submit Video Proof - Did you post video proof of you project?
  • Stick to the Theme - How well did your project stick to the theme (any holiday project) of the competition?
  • Demonstrate Originality - Was your project your original?  Did you come up with a clever name for their project?

The holidays are time for Star Wars especially this year with the Mandalorean and the much anticipated release of The Rise of Skywalker!

 

Just about everything on the pi zero w has been wrapped in Kapton tape to prevent short circuits. Pinouts from the MAX98357A have been directly soldered to the pi zero w. Project 26: Mini LED Christmas Tree  by

 

The holidays when there's always a little time for a quick holiday projects and a learning circuit!

 

This quick project will get you in the festive mood. shows you how to make yourself a simple Mini LED Christmas Tree for your study table/computer desk.  So fire up the 3D printer and grab some LEDs.  He also suggests that you check out The Learning Circuit 02: Series & Parallel Circuits if you want to learn about parallel circuits!

Project 27: Gravity Assisted Blinking Coin Cell Christmas Tree by

 

The Holidays are a time for doing stuff with friends and grandchildren!

 

This is a project did with a friend just before Christmas.  He was even able to get his grandson involved in.  The idea is to use a CR2032 coin cell to power LEDs as it rolls down a ramp.  The project is constructed from foam board cut out with a hobbyist knife and copper tape used to make the connections with the coin cell.  It is best understood by seeing it in action....

The holidays are a time for decorating your place with lights and stars and cool projects for Fathers and kids!

 

For , the holidays are fun when he and his family decorate the place lights and stars.  LEDs are mostly used for this purpose, so he's given a project as one of our judges pointed out that is a "great project for fathers and kids."  He made a really great DIY video, good documentation, and let's you know what you need for a project to do with your kids during Christmas.

Project 29: Hello My Name is...In Lights! (with instructional video and all required files!)  by :

 

The holidays are a time to make yourself instantly memorable even in a crowed party or event!

 

Have you ever wanted to stand apart from the crowd at party or event? Tired of boring name tags that make you feel the same as as everyone else? Well, has a simple project, that's guaranteed to get the attention you deserve.  With a  Hello My Name is...In Light name tag, you'll make yourself instantly memorable and be forever known as that person with the LED name tag that looked so cool.  He's provided a link to the 3D printed parts is provided https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2687490 and given you clear instruction on how you make one yourself using a small arduino, 3 LED lights, paperclips, and a couple of batteries. Its just a really great name tag, that will also come in handy if you are in a room that is not well lit.  Who knows?  Getting people to notice you is very important in attracting new clients, getting a promotion, and possibly meeting the love of your life who would have otherwise not noticed you!

Project 30: Cotton LED star with Digispark module  by

 

The holidays are a time for cool Christmas decorations that glow and do cool things with LEDs!

 

This is one of many great projects that submitted and not the only one that was considered as a first place finisher.  There was also Infrared thermometer (featured later) and Simple thermometer which were both really cool projects. Cotton LED star is a simple Christmas decoration that is made from 5 orange LEDs, a few pieces of hotmelt and cotton thread.  Each LED Diode is controlled by the digispark module with ATTINY85 module and the program was written using the C language. Source code is attached to the project and schematic is also provided!
